Kaeng Krachan National Park Day Trip

Trip to Kaeng Krachan National Park (From Hua Hin area. Duration about 8 hours):

Kaeng Krachan is the largest national park in Thailand. The park is located in Phetchaburi and Prachuap Khiri Khan Provinces, bounded by the Tanintharyi Nature Reserve along Myanmar’s border to the West.

Two rivers (Mae Nam Phetchaburi and Mae Nam Pranburi), a large lake and abundant rainfall keep the place green year-round. Animal life is prolific and includes wild elephants, deer, gibbons, boars, dusky langurs and wild cattle. This park also occupies an interesting, overlapping bio-zone for birds as the southernmost spot for northern species and the northernmost for southern species. There are about 400 species of birds, including hornbills, as well as pheasants and other ground dwellers.

Kaeng Krachan Reservoir

As the national park’s namesake attraction, this 45-square-kilometre reservoir formed after the Phetchaburi River was dammed in 1965. The scenery is lovely and migratory birds arrive every year in March and April. A road lined with flowering trees passes a large lotus pond on the way up to the dam, which most Thailand travellers consider a must-visit attraction in the area.

The water stretches to the east of a central portion of the park. Access to this area of the park is free. The area can be viewed from atop the dam in Baan Kaeng Krachan or Park Headquarters, where a nifty suspension bridge stretches across an inlet.

Kaeng Krachan Dam

Holding the reservoir within the Kaeng Krachan National Park, the dam is outside the park, 5 km northeast of the HQ. There are a few islands in the reservoir and some water activities can be found. There is a viewpoint on the top of dam.

Phetchaburi River + Rafting

The Phetchaburi River takes you through a wonderful rafting journey, which lasts for almost 6 hours. However, the time certainly depends on the speed of the river-currents. The rafting route is quite breathtaking, since it makes you float through the beautiful lush green forests and the picturesque villages of Thailand. Paddling along the tranquil waters of the river, you can surely feel the strength of amazing waters running beneath your raft.

The Phetchaburi River will bring you loads of excitement and dramatic white-water action, making your entire voyage quite an exhilarating experience!
